Tri-Cities Magicians' Society

The meeting began at approximately 6:45 pm on August 17, 2004. Location: 541 Café (541 Franklin Street, Clarksville, TN).

Members Present: Charles Rhodes, Paul Herrell, Jim Dennis, Wallace Redd, & Stephen Schroering

Guests Present: Daryl Grace & Kyle Gray

Wallace called the meeting to order and all present introduced themselves and gave a brief summary of their interest in magic.

Battle of the Magicians; we already have one application, Wallace confirmed with the 541 that we were still down in their calendar book. Paul measured the room for performance space, 13 feet wide, 8 foot ceiling. Will post this so won't anyone try a massive stage illusion in the competition.

Charles is designing t-shirt artwork. Paul and Charles are going to work on t-shirts, screen printing, etc. and have t-shirts at the competition for purchase by magicians and lay-persons.

Paul is getting the TCMS logo setup of making polo shirts, etc. Setup fee is $180.00, Paul and Wallace are going to split the fee and then for each shirt sold $10.00 will be added to the cost until they recoup the fee and then it will no longer be charged. Colors for polo shirts considered: Black, Dark Blue, Red, & Maroon.

Names for the Mascot discussed: Tri-Cities Trickster(Trixter) & Abracadabra, still open for suggestions. Will have a vote at a future meeting, no time limit discussed.

Stephen brought up the possibility of a show for Relay for Life. All members agreed to be available and thought it was a good idea. Discussed should probably charge $5.00 and final details of payment for the club to be finalized later. Tentative date set for early October.

Paul has completed most of the work on club portfolio. He will present it at the next meeting for review and approval.

Jim gave a treasurer's report.

SEAM 2004 was discussed. Paul has applications available. All encouraged to attend.

The business meeting was adjourned and table set up for magic.

This month's theme is 'Torn and Restored Something'.

Charles started off with an awesome torn and restored where the paper is already torn into pieces, he reads headlines off of each piece, and then the pieces restore to become a complete newspaper.

Paul followed by performing a torn and restored card routine. A chosen card was signed by spectator, Kyle, and then Paul tore the card into four pieces, giving Kyle one of the pieces as a receipt. Paul then restored the card before the spectators eyes except for the piece which Kyle had been holding, which matched up perfectly.

Wallace proceeded to perform a flurry of magic. He started with a "Wild" torn and restored card trick, followed by an amazing card warp routine using a playing card and a borrowed bill. Wallace continued with a finger chopper in which Daryl put his finger and future in jeopardy, but alas everything went as planned and Daryl left the meeting as he came, in one piece. Wallace finished his routine with the "HELL" tear, discussing why you should listen when you go to church.

Jim followed with a torn and restored paper. He took a complete paper, tore it into little pieces and proceeded to restore it to a perfectly mint newspaper, showing inside and out. Very visual magic.

Stephen then performed a three card monte routine, followed by a routine in which the spectators chosen card is the only card left out of sequence in a Triumph type routine, of course allowing Stephen to devine the spectators card. Cool stuff.

Kyle followed, performing some card magic. The first effect where multiple aces, faces, and numbered cards exchange places several times and an amazing sequence. Kyle then performed another card effect where a selected card reverses itself in the deck and is revealed to the spectators.

Much discussion followed of the tricks performed, strengths, and weaknesses. Sleights used in many of the effects were discussed and demonstrated. Other magic was performed to help demonstrate other sleights, etc.

Several effects were performed for the waitress by some of the members.

Discussion about recent books and videos read or seen by the members proceeded, giving what were thought to be strengths and weaknesses of the material.

Much information, friendship, and fun was had by all. Meeting broke up about 9:45 PM.
